Jane Eyre and Space Opera

I'm taking a short break in the middle of my mid morning writing. I woke up a little early and was doing some dishes while listening to my Jane Eyre audiobook.

When I sat down to write on one of my current projects the writing came out a little funny. This is only a first draft so I'm not going to change it just now but my characters are talking and acting a little strangely today. See below:
“Are you sure that you can offer this? You’re sure that your Aunt will allow it?” She studied Jundi’s facial features searching for anything to show evidence that her new prospects were not to be.

Great Blog Post by Johnny B. Truant on Writing and Reaching the Dream of a Novel.

There's a countdown in this blogpost in which he lays out things that he's learned writing a few novels. Since he's written this he's written several more best selling kindle books and I know that at least one of them is still ranked somewhere in the three thousand rank (that's pretty good).

Ira Glass on Creativity

Many people have heard this and seen this I'm sure, but it's solid and I wanted to share it here.

I've Been Gone for Way too Long and What I've Learned

I'm still here. I got a new job and couldn't put as much time into the website as I'd hoped. It looks like a handful of people are clicking through to see it though.

I've made significant progress in many areas of my life since I set this blog up. I happier in my new job and I've consistently managed to continue working on Spanish, playing the guitar, & writing. I've even managed to do a bit of exercise (mostly inspired by my wifes success).

You can look for that post upcoming as to how I've managed to regularly improved my life. It's easy stuff that anyone can do.

I just found this "Manifesto" today but it largely sums up what's been going on in my life lately.
Check it out and give it a quick read. It has some cursing so, ignore it if that's not your bag.

Finally, here's your cool creative commons of the day which is from here.

When Rainbows Attack!

This is a short story that I wrote for fun.
As I stood in the hills overlooking the city, I watched the buildings crumble under the feet of the rainbow monsters. I couldn't help but reflect on my life choices that had lead me to this moment as well as many others like it. I looked over at Jim as he took the first puff of his second cigarette. Oh wait, I’m sorry, I forgot that he likes to be called Jas now, don’t remember why exactly, something to do with… Well, you don’t care about that. You, like most people, are focusing on the least interesting part of the story - the rainbow monsters. At least that’s the least interesting part of the story for me. I’m still really weirded out as to why he wants to be called Jas; isn't that a girl’s name? There were three of them though, the rainbow monsters. They were basically huge, translucent, multicolored arches, easily several hundred feet tall. Two huge, circular eyeballs sat on either side of an even larger mouth like some kind of a M…

New Podcast Writing Excuses

Okay so it isn't actually a new podcast but it's new to me. It is a podcast in which published authors discuss the craft and the business in a way to teach throes who would like to become authors.

The Authors Are:
Mary Robinette Kowal
Brandon Sanderson
Howard Taylor
Dan Wells
The podcast are all bite size at around fifteen to twenty minutes so it's a great thing to listen to on a commute or while picking up around the house.

So far I've listened to the most recent podcast, which as of now is 3 Pronged Character Development.

I also listened to one from back in May that was of particular interest to me. It was about short stories, the differences between writing them and novels, and how helpful they are in getting a publishing deal.
Writing Excuses Short Stories
Below, you'll find the link to where I found out about this podcast. It was an article written in May of last year so it may not be completely up to date, but it lists several other podcasts t…

My First Post and a couple of my favorite writing links

First off I'd like to apologize to the people who've come across this blog when there was nothing posted on it.

I have two kids and a wife who also works full-time. On top of that we have no daycare so the housework and kids take up a lot of free time for both of us. Anyways - here goes!

This is my first post on this blog. The purpose of this blog is to work on my writing and to promote myself.

I'll even share what I learn about writing and the writing industry along the way. I'm going to go to bed soon but I actually do have something that I can share that I've found to be incredibly helpful.

You can find some of my favorite links on my website I am in the process of linking this blog to that site but I haven't found a button that I can push to do that yet so it will have to wait.
